Valentine's Day Crafts for Preschoolers: Heart Pom Pom Monster

Valentine's Day is in 2 days! Grace and I have been having fun crafting lately to celebrate. Check out our other Valentine's Day crafts here! I think she's especially liking these crafts because she gets to use red and pink (her favorite color!)

We tried something a little different today and I think it turned out cute.

Pom Pom Monster

He didn't turn out exactly how I pictured him in my head, but Grace adores him and has been carrying him around all day. So I call this craft a success!

To make your Heart Pom Pom Monster you will need yarn, scissors, cardboard, glue, cardstock, a pipe cleaner, googly eyes, and thin ribbon.

Cut two identical small circles out of your cardboard. Make a small round hole in the center of each circle. These don't have to be perfect. The smaller your circle, the smaller your pom pom. I wish I would have made mine a tiny bit smaller.

Cut a piece of your ribbon long enough to make a circle the same size as your cardboard circle. Place it on one piece of the cardboard and then cover it with the other piece of cardboard. Don't tie the ends, you will use it to tie off your yarn in a minute.

Now comes the tedious part. Thread your yarn through the center hole and wrap it around both cardboard pieces. Do this over and over again until you cover your cardboard as much as possible. The more you wrap it, the fuller your pom pom will be. I gave up after the cardboard was wrapped fully but I wish I would have added a couple of more layers to make it fuller.

Once you are satisfied with your yarn covering, take your scissors and find a spot to start cutting the yarn between the two cardboard pieces. Cut all around the edges of your circle making sure to hold your cardboard pieces together while you cut.
After you have cut all the way around the circle, find the two ends of your ribbon and tie a tight double knot. Pull your pieces of cardboard off either side and voila, you have a pom pom!
I like to make a knot at the end of my excess ribbon so that I can hang my pom pom but feel free to cut off your excess ribbon if you want.

This is where the little ones can start really helping. First, glue on the googly eyes. Cut two short pieces of pipe cleaner and attach small hearts to the tops. Glue the pipe cleaners to the top of the pom pom as antennas. Cut out a heart and glue it to the bottom of the pom pom as feet.

I hope everyone has a great Valentine's Day!!
