Too many doctors!

When  Connor and I came down with colds over a week ago, I didn't think much of it. I just tried to keep us hydrated and we went about our normal business. A week ago Monday, Grace started acting like she had the same cold. She woke up Tuesday with a high fever and she wasn't acting like herself. I had no idea what was wrong, but I decided to take her to the pediatrician. They suspected a UTI and did tests which came back negative. They couldn't figure out what was wrong and said it was probably just a virus and to come back if it got worse. Over the next couple of days, her fever stayed down with meds and she was back to her normal self. I thought we were all on the mend.

It all went downhill from there. Friday night, we went to play with some friends at a local splash park. The kids were exhausted and went to bed easily. After getting them to bed, Mike noticed that his arm was starting to itch. He was starting to break out in hives. I went to the store to get him some Benedryl and by the time I returned, his entire body was covered. After a cold shower to help the itching and to let the Benedryl kick in, the hives were becoming one big red mass. It was getting worse, not better and his nose and top lip were swelling up. So my wonderful friend Julie from Director Jewels packed up her baby and came to stay with the kids while I took him to the ER at 11 PM. After a horrible reaction to the IV, they got his blood pressure stabilized and gave him steroids that got rid of the hives within minutes. We have absolutely no idea what caused the reaction. He was released around 1:30 AM and we returned home to find that our kids had woken up shortly after we left and had been happily playing with their friend Addie the entire time. I owe Julie big time!! We all finally got to bed around 2 AM and I was hopeful that our excitement was over. Oh by the way, the kids got me up at 6 the next morning.

All day Saturday, Grace's fever was running a bit higher than it had been. It never got above 101 degrees so I just watched her. She acted fine, just a bit tired. Mike's company had an event at the Royals game on Sunday and we decided to try it and leave if she acted any worse. She slept in the stroller through the hour of tailgating (very very unlike her) and sat totally still in her seat for the first 5 minutes of the game. We decided to get her home at that point. By the time we got to the car we could tell that she was burning up. After some Tylenol and a shower to try to bring her temp down, all she wanted to do was sleep. She just laid in Mike or I's lap and slept. She HATES napping so this is entirely out of character for her.

I honestly wasn't sure what to do. I was only getting a fever reading of 102 and she didn't have any other symptoms except the coughing from the cold, but I decided to take her to urgent care anyway. Something seemed wrong and I needed to get her checked. Sure enough, they got a reading of 104.5 degrees and her oxygen level was only 92. She was on the verge of needing oxygen and after a chest x-ray, the pediatrician diagnosed her with pneumonia. She wouldn't even touch the cookie the doctor gave her for being so good. With a prescription for antibiotics, they sent us home. By Monday night, the antibiotics kicked in and she was acting much better. She is still clingy and uncomfortable, but she is eating and drinking again. Her energy is slowly starting to return but we've been watching a lot of movies and snuggling on the couch.

While Grace was on the mend, Connor was still struggling with a cough and runny nose from the cold. He never ran a fever more than 100 degrees and until yesterday seemed to be okay. But yesterday, he got unusually fussy. He cried whenever I put him down and wouldn't play independently at all. He basically crawled after me crying "mama, mama." He was still acting like that this morning and I debated about making yet another trip to the pediatrician. Other than a cough and runny nose, he had no other symptoms. But again, he wasn't acting like himself and so I took him in. Sure enough he has a double ear infection.

So both of my kids are on antibiotics and we have had 2 trips to the pediatrician, one visit to Urgent Care and one visit to the ER all in one week. I am doctored out and so ready for everyone in our house to be healthy. But I think I am going to the doctor for myself tomorrow because I have had a cough for 2 weeks and it isn't getting any better. Blah!!

  1. When your kids graduate high school, the story of how I played with them at 1am is going to be written in the cards I give them. :p

Please get better, all of you!!!
