Snow Days!

After a fairly warm winter, we were hit with two nasty snow storms this past week here in Kansas City. We got about 10 inches on Thursday and then another 6-7 inches Monday and Tuesday.

This was our deck after the the first storm on Thursday:

Mike had to clear a path for the dogs to get out.

After a little bit of melting, this is what we woke up to on Tuesday!

We lost several large branches but thankfully kept power the entire time. I know many people in the area were not so lucky. It was an extremely heavy snow and all of our branches were drooping.

Mike was able to work from home from Thursday to Tuesday and we had a lot of great family time.

We decided to let Grace play with snow inside and just set her on a towel with a Tupperware container full. She asked for a spoon and then proceeded to eat every last bit of it. She thought it was pretty great. Connor thought it was pretty hilarious.

Most of the mornings we spent cuddled up nice and warm in bed. Grace was refusing to look at the camera, but she was making us put her "night night" under the pillow with her baby.

When the second round of snow arrived, Grace was so excited and she wanted to show Connor. They sat like this mesmerized by the falling snow for a long time.

We did several fun activities to try to keep Grace from going stir crazy. I found these gel window clings in the Target $1 section weeks ago and thought I would save them for a rainy day. I figured this was the perfect chance to bring them out and sure enough she loved sticking them on and rearranging them to her heart's content.

Finally, on Tuesday afternoon after all of the snow had stopped, we bundled her up and let her go play on the deck. She was so excited and kept picking up the snow to show us. She ran in it as fast as she could and even started picking it up and throwing it in the air saying "wee!" (she has done this with leaves with her Papa before.) After about 15 minutes, her little nose was bright red and I made her come inside because it was freezing cold. She threw a massive tantrum; I really think she would have stayed out there for hours if I would have let her.

I am not a snow person. I could never live up north where it snows like this all of the time. And I am so thankful that we didn't have to drive in it. But overall, we had a pretty good week and enjoyed our snow days.

Now I'm ready for spring!

Thirsties Duo Cloth Diaper Review and Giveaway!

For the second day of my 1k Facebook Fans celebration, I have a great cloth diaper to giveaway! Thirsties gave me the opportunity to try their Duo Diaper. It has so many great features and it has become one of my go to diapers.

The mission of Thirsties, Inc. is to make it easy and affordable for every family to choose cloth while simultaneously investing in our local economy and sustainable business practices.

We are committed to building our business in a sustainable manner by focusing on the health of our babies and the environment. Only the best USA-sourced components are chosen for our products in order to reduce our carbon footprint, to help support domestic textile mills and our local economy, and to ensure that Thirsties diapers will last wash after wash. We are committed to creating only the highest quality products and dedicated to providing exceptional design and unparalleled performance while saving you money.

The Duo Diaper comes in two sizes, size 1 for for babies 6-18 lbs, and size 2 for babies 18-40 lbs. Thirsties knows that many "one size" diapers really don't fit newborns and this two size system allows parents to buy only two sizes to cover their baby from birth all the way to potty training. I received a size two for Connor since he is somewhere around 16 lbs and I didn't want him to outgrow it right away (yes, he's huge for an almost 4 month old!)

The rise is set at the smallest setting and I am able to get a great fit on him.

The duo diaper is different from every other pocket diaper I have used in that it has an opening on each side of the diaper allowing for easier stuffing. Instead of having to stick your hand into the pocket and work the insert in, you can simply stuff it from one side and pull the end from the other side. Also, unlike many of my other pocket diapers, the insert always agitate free in the washer. I love not having to pull the dirty insert out of the diaper before washing it.

The insert has two layers that snap together. The first is two layers of serged microfiber terry. The second is five serged layers of hemp jersey. This insert is so absorbent!

My favorite feature of this diaper is the Thirsties signature leg gussets. These extra panels of fabric around the legs prevent those nasty leaks. The first time Connor wore it, he had what normally would have been a huge blowout poop. This diaper kept it all contained. I have not had a single leak with it. That makes it a winner in my book!

I just had to include his cute fluffy bum! I love this print!

I highly recommend Thirsties Duo Diapers and I love that all of Thirsties products are made in the USA! The prints are adorable and I really want to buy more!

Thirsties has generously offered one of my readers a Duo Diaper in the print and closure type of the winner's choice!

Nuby Booster Seat Review & Giveaway

I just want to take a second and say a huge thank you to all of my readers! I hit a huge milestone last week that I'm honestly still in shock about, I have over 1,000 Facebook fans! So to say thank you, I have lined up a couple of great giveaways for you over the next few days!

I am so excited to get to share this great Nuby product with you. I knew as soon as I saw the Booster Seat that it would be a huge hit in our house.

Grace loves any product that will help her in her mission to do things like a big girl (like her Nuby Step Up Stool and Nuby Fun Cups!) Lately, she has been refusing to sit in the high chair. She only wants to sit in an adult chair but she's not quite tall enough to reach the table. She was so excited when she realized that she could reach the table easily with the Booster Seat!

I promise she was excited. I can't believe she actually willingly looked at the camera, this is the best picture I've gotten of her in weeks!

The Nûby™ Booster Seat is safe, durable and strong. It features a wide sturdy base, and subtle contours that are comfortable and stylish. It comes equipped with safety straps that can be attached to most chairs. Holds up to 65 pounds!

This seat is lightweight and straps easily onto the chair. The straps keep it very secure, even when Grace tries to climb on or off of it by herself.

Grace loves the handles on the side because they help keep her steady when she climbs on and off of it. I love how easy it is to clean the chair. There are no indents or grooves for food to get stuck in and the straps come off easily to be cleaned.

The Nuby Booster Seat can be purchased at

Toddler Activity: Playing with rice

Sometimes the simplest activities are the ones that Grace enjoys the most. I didn't have to spend very long getting this activity ready, but she loved it! I put some dried rice into a bowl and gave her several cups, small Tupperware containers and measuring spoons to play with. Eventually I added some uncooked pasta to the mix and we buried wooden letters in it for her to dig and find. She loved pouring the rice from container to container and crunching it between her fingers. She played for about 30 minutes with it. She made a mess but it was really easy to clean up and it was worth it. Next time I will add dried beans to the mix for another texture to explore.

She loves these breaks from her normal toys!

Children's Activities

How to you decide which activities to put your kids in?

There are so many options, dance, sports, art, music....the list goes on and on! And every single class costs quite a bit of money.

Grace loves activity and getting out of the house. She thrives on constant stimulation and we've been trying to find activities to peek her interest. We've tried music classes and although she loved the singing and dancing, she didn't like having to follow the class structure. For $7 a class, I just couldn't justify going when she wasn't getting much out of it. So we thought trying some physical activities would help burn off some of her extra energy!

This past weekend we started swimming lessons with Grace's friend Brooke. They ended up in matching swimsuits and looked pretty adorable running down the hallway from the locker room. They were so excited to go swimming!

It was hard to get a good picture because they were running. As soon as Grace saw the pool, she wanted to run right in. She angrily sat on the bleachers waiting for the teacher to get everything ready.

We had fun except the pool was absolutely freezing! By about 20 minutes in Grace's lips were blue and she was shivering. It made for a very unhappy end to the lesson. If it's not warmer for the next lesson, I'm probably going to ask for my money back.

Yesterday we tried out a free Gymboree class with Brooke and Peighton.

Grace had an amazing time and basically ran around climbing and sliding like a crazy child. But the classes range anywhere from $80-$100 a month! That seems crazy to me to pay that much for classes for a toddler.

I don't really know what we will try next. When she turns 3, we will probably see about doing some sort of team sport or gymnastics. My dad keeps suggesting martial arts because she has a pretty bad temper and it wouldn't hurt her to learn how to control it!

What are you children's favorite activities? Do you limit the number they do?

C-Section Tips

I remember being extremely anti c-section when I was pregnant with Grace. I read so many books about pregnancy and labor, but skipped all of the chapters about c-sections. I pretty much zoned out when they were talked about in my childbirth class as I was sure I wouldn't need the info. Well, of course when it came time for my c-section, I had absolutely no clue what to expect or how to handle it. Now 3 months after my 2nd c-section, I thought I'd share some tips for those expecting in case you do end up having to have one. I know it's not the ideal situation for anyone, but they do happen and it's best to be prepared!

Scheduled c-section tips
Grace Elaine- Unplanned c-section after a failed induction- 1/14/11

Connor Michael- Planned c-section- 10/29/12

1. You will generally be awake during the surgery, so be vocal. By that I mean let the doctors know how you are feeling. If you are starting to get nauseous, tell them right away so that they can give you something to stop you from throwing up. I had to do that 3 times during my surgery with Connor and each time they gave me something that immediately relived the nausea. It is okay to ask "is this normal?" in regards to what you are feeling.

2. This is your birth experience. Ask questions and don't ever feel like you don't know what's going on. I regret that when I had Grace I was scared and intimidated and didn't ask questions. I had no idea what was going on or what would happen after the procedure was finished. With Connor, I asked tons of questions and felt much more in control of the experience,

3. Take time after your surgery to bond with your baby. You will not get the immediate moment that a vaginal birth mom gets of holding your baby right after delivery, so be selfish and take as much time as you want/need before allowing any visitors. Nurse your baby as soon as possible!

4. Don't try to be superwoman. You just had major surgery and it will hurt. Take the medicine your doctor prescribes when you are supposed to. If you keep on the schedule for the medicine, you should be able to stay ahead of the pain. With Grace, I thought I was ok and stopped taking the meds too quickly and regretted it.With Connor I was very careful to stay on the medication schedule and I feel like my recovery was much easier because I didn't push myself as hard.

5. Ask for help. If you have people offer to help you, say yes! This was a hard one for me. I hate not being able to do things for myself, but honestly Mike and my parents did so much the first few weeks with each of our kids. For the first few days, Mike changed all of the diapers and I think it was a great bonding experience for him! This is the time for you to rest and enjoy bonding with your baby. Let everyone else worry about cooking and cleaning!

It took about 6 weeks before I felt completely back to normal each time. Feel free to comment or email me if you have any questions about c-sections! You can read both of our kid's birth stories here.

Yummi Pouch: Review and Giveaway!

I've talked before about how hard it is to get Grace to eat her veggies right now. Her favorite way to eat them is out of the expensive pouches you can buy, she'll eat anything in a pouch without hesitation. But those pouches cost a dollar or two a piece so we can really only afford to buy them every once and a while. I began to research an alternative to the pricey pre made pouches and was happy to find an amazing product called the Yummi Pouch!

Yummi Pouch is a product encouraging families with young children to bring healthy snacks with them wherever they go. Our reusable squeeze pouches provide a way for kids to eat on-the-go without the mess of using a spoon. They are dishwasher friendly, freezer friendly, BPA-free, and phthalate-free.

I received a set of 6 pouches to try and decided to make a puree to fill them. I pureed steamed broccoli, applesauce and a little bit of lemon juice in the food processor and then used a spoon to put it in the pouches. I made a bit of a mess trying to get it in, so I learned to use a funnel or Yummi Pouch's filling funnel pitcher the next time. The pouch is nice and sturdy and stands up by itself in the fridge or freezer. I was worried that they might leak, but I have put them in the diaper bag several times and have not had a single leak. The zip close top stayed sealed and the cap screws on tightly.

Grace took right to this pouch and loves eating out of it. Unfortunately, she hates the camera and wouldn't let me get a decent picture, but trust me, your toddler will love it! They make great easy snacks when we are out doing errands and I know they will be great this summer when we are at the zoo or the pool. I will also be able to use them to easily store and transport Connor's homemade baby food.

My favorite feature of the Yummi Pouch is that it is dishwasher safe! I ran them through the dishwasher with no problems. I'm going to try to make smoothies for my next set of pouches. Check out Yummi Pouch's website for some great recipes!

A set of 6 pouches is $14.99. So much more affordable and better for the environment than the store bought pouches!

Yummi Pouch has generously offered TWO of my readers a set of 6 Yummi Pouches! That's right, there will be two winners!

Connor's 3 month pictures

Last week, I took Connor to get his pictures taken for his 3 month session. Every great grandchild on Mike's side has had their pictures taken in a special outfit that Gigi (great grandma) bought for them and it was Connor's turn. I decided to have him wear a casual outfit as well. He was being a huge flirt with the photographer and we got some very cute ones.

Of course, the only time he got mad was when we needed to get the full on shot for great grandma.

This was Grace at 3 months in her outfit:
They still don't look much alike to me!

Bella Bare Wear

Grace is starting her first swim lessons this weekend and I've been frantically looking for a cute swimsuit for her. We normally end up going with a rash guard two piece for her because it makes it easier to do diaper changes. I always want to get her one of the cute one pieces but can't stand the idea of having to strip her down for each diaper change. Enter Bella Bare Wear, the original snap change swimsuit for girls! After dealing with the inconvenience of diaper changes with traditional swimsuits at the beach, Ashley decided to create a suit that was more functional with snaps in the crotch! This is her story (watch and I guarantee the little girl at the beginning will make you smile!)

Bella Bare Wear prides itself in offering high quality American made products that are both functional and stylish.

  • Three snap crotch for easy diaper changes and bathroom trips
  • Sizes include 6-12m, 12-18m, 18-24m, 2T, 3T and 4T
  • Deluxe Tricot 4-way stretch fabric that will stretch to fit your little one all summer long
  • UPF 50+ fabric to protect your little ones skin from all those harmful rays
  • White lining throughout for the softest feel against your babies skin
I love the designs, check them out here!

The black and white collection is my favorite:
How cute is that ruffle butt? I love it!

I think the paisley and plaid collections are adorable too!

Right now, Bella Bare Wear is on Kickstarter trying to get fully funded in the next 14 days. They are just over $4000 away from their goal and are offering some amazing discounts to help reach 100% funding including:
  • For a pledge of only $30, you will get one piece (any swimsuit or cover-up) from the 2013 Bella Bare Wear swim line at close to wholesale cost! Your choice of style and fabric options! That is a 33% savings over retail ($5 SHIPPING INCLUDED!)
  • For a pledge of only $60, you will get two pieces (any swimsuit or cover-up) from the 2013 Bella Bare Wear swim line at close to wholesale cost! Your choice of style and fabric options! That is a 33% savings over retail ($5 SHIPPING INCLUDED)
To pledge money to get one of their adorable swimsuits and help Bella Bare Wear, check out their Kickstarter page now! Like their Facebook page to keep updated on their progress and listen to this great interview that Ashley did that aired yesterday!

Keep an eye out, if Bella Bare Wear gets their funding, I will be offering a great giveaway of one of their swimsuits to one of my readers!

Comfy Rumps Cloth Diapers Review and Giveaway

I'm happy to say that Connor is now in cloth diapers the majority of the time! He looks so cute in them with his rolls and I love how much money we are saving by not buying disposables. He has very sensitive skin and has had no trouble with rashes since wearing primarily cloth. With disposables he had a horrible rash that took us several weeks to get cleared up. I've been slowly increasing my stash and so I was excited when Comfy Rumps offered to send me one of their pocket style diapers!

Comfy Rumps prides itself for making high quality diapers at an affordable price. With diapers ranging from 7.75 to 10.75 including a microfiber insert, these are some of the most affordable cloth diapers I have seen! The designs are cute and I can't say enough about how much I love the fit of these diapers.

The inside of the diaper is a very soft microfleece that keeps him comfortable. The insert is very absorbent.

There is a row of snaps on top to get a great waist fit and a row of bottom snaps to get a good hip and leg fit. The tabs have 4 snaps each allowing them to be crossed over for thinner babies.  Connor has a skinnier waist line with pudgy thighs making it difficult to get a snug fit with most diapers. I love this snap configuration for him!

There are also snaps for rise adjustment allowing the diaper to grow with him.

We have used this diaper for play time and nap time and have had no leaks. It is my favorite diaper right now because of the great snap configuration and I plan on buying more. I love how affordable they are and they have some adorable designs that I want such as:

The Spidey-Man
The Tiger Fuzzy Fuzzy
Comfy Rumps has a great promotion going on right now! When you buy 12 diapers or more, enter the code WinterSale12 during checkout and receive two original cloth diapers for free!

Comfy Rumps has generously offered one of my readers a cloth diaper of the winner's choice!
