How hard can it be?

I thought that I would have so much time as a stay at home mom. I thought I would be able to accomplish everything during nap times and then be super active mom when Grace was awake. We would do crafts, cook, have play dates, etc and everything would be easy.

I was delusional.

Yes, we do go on play dates. And occasionally we do color or try to attempt something crafty. But accomplishing anything else, especially housework or cooking, is nearly impossible. Why? Because Grace is a horrible napper.

I've been hesitant to write this because it makes me feel like a huge failure. How hard can it be to get your child to nap? For me, nearly impossible. I take that back, she will nap, but only when I'm holding her. Yep, you read that right, my nearly 15 month old will not nap in her crib or anywhere else but on me. Trust me, I've tried. She's been sleeping through the night in her crib for months without any trouble and bedtime at night is easy. I give her a bottle, cuddle and rock her for a few minuets, put her in the crib awake, and within minutes after a tiny bit of whining, she's out for the night. So why can't she nap in there during the day?? It baffles me.

So these past few weeks, I've been on a mission to get her to nap in the crib. I have been keeping a strict routine and it actually seems like it might be working. It has been hard. We have to make sure we're home by a certain time each day and that she doesn't fall asleep in the car. If she falls asleep in the car, it throws off the whole routine. A few minutes before nap time (11ish) I start telling her that it is about time to take a nap. I give her a few minutes to play and repeat myself. I then tell her it's time to go to her room and to grab ladybug (her lovey.) Generally I carry her into her room although today she grabbed ladybug and walked towards her room whining the entire time. We sit in the glider and read 2 books. I cuddle her for a few minutes and then I put her in the crib. I then let her cry until she goes to sleep. Last week, she would scream for an hour before she would go to sleep. This week, she's only been crying for about 10 minutes. That's huge progress in my book! I know crying it out does not work for everyone, but it's the only thing that has worked for us so please save the mean comments. She is currently going on 20 minutes of nap time so far today and I am thrilled.

Now the struggle is this, after about 45 minutes napping, she wakes up. If I go get her, she falls asleep on me and sleeps for another hour or so. If I let her cry, she'll keep crying for ever. I just don't know what to do about this! She is still tired after the 45 minutes. Any suggestions?

I never ever thought that sleep would be such a huge issue as a mom. I feel like my whole life revolves around getting her to sleep sometimes!!

And now, for a cute picture. Fast asleep Saturday morning in bed with mommy and daddy. In 2T pajamas by the way!

Rain rain go away!

Last week in KC, we had the most amazing weather! Grace and I had play dates in the park and we went to the zoo. This week, it has rained every single day. Grace constantly goes to the back door and looks out the window, wanting to go outside. I don't blame her, I'm going a bit stir crazy too!

To remind myself that good weather will be here soon enough, here are some cute pictures of our outside adventures last week!

We went to the zoo with my good friend Julie and Grace's "boy friend" Lincoln early in the week. Luckily I had bought a zoo pass, because the line to get general admission tickets was about an hour long! It was Spring Break in KC and it was in the high 70s. It was a perfect zoo day. While we were waiting to pick up the zoo season pass, Julie caught this picture of Grace and Lincoln holding hands. How much cuter can it get?

In the afternoon, Grace and I spent every day waiting for daddy to get home on the deck. After dinner, we would head out to the deck again for play time. We even got to grill one night. Grandma and Papa bought Grace a water play table for her birthday and we decided to get it out and give it a dry test run. She loved it even without the water!

The dogs loved spending all of that time outside! I even got a few decent pictures of them which is nearly impossible to do!

Later in the week, we ventured to the park with Julie and Lincoln. It took us quite a while to find a park that wasn't packed or surrounded by teenagers, but finally we found one where the kids could run themselves ragged. And they did.

Yes, she is going up the slide. She enjoyed going down it too.
Partners in crime!
Nice weather, please come back! Keeping a toddler entertained after being outside for a week straight is not the easiest task in the world!

A funny thing happened in our house the other day. I told Grace we needed to go change her diaper, she looked at me and then started off towards her room. I followed her and she walked right up to her changing table and waited for me to pick her up.

If I ask her if she wants to eat, she'll nod yes and head towards the kitchen. If she's thirsty, she will do her sign for milk and then hand me her sippy cup.

I can't tell you the exact date that it became obvious that she is truly communicating with us, it's been a gradual thing. But it's so amazing to watch!

Boy Birthday Gift- Dino Hoodie

Last month, one of Grace's little friends turned one. I have been trying to make most of the birthday presents we are giving lately to help save money, but I was a bit baffled by this one because this friend is a boy. For girls, you can make all sorts of cute clothing items. But for boys, what can you make? After searching on Pinterest, I found this gem: the Dino Boy Hoodie on the Ginger and George blog.

Dinosaur Hoodie

Even with my basic sewing skills, this was an easy project! Ginger and George has a great tutorial that is super easy to follow. I apologize for the weirdly lit photos, my camera was being odd.

Any boy is sure to love being a dinosaur! I bet a girl would love it too :)

14 Months!

You are 14 months today! You are getting to be such a big girl. You are learning so much each day and it's so fun to watch your mind figure things out!

You are growing taller by the day and are comfortably fitting in to 18 month clothes. I put 24 month PJs on you today and they fit pretty well. You have 14 teeth, you obviously are continuing the one tooth for every month pattern. Mommy was going through some of your old clothes and found the sleeper you wore in the hospital when you were only 3 days old. Of course, a photo shoot was necessary. You weren't wanting to cooperate however. Look how much you've grown!

Here's some of the things that have been keeping us busy this month!
  • You love to climb things. The coffee table, mommy, daddy, anything you can find. You aren't always successful but you are extremely persistent. You were so proud when you pushed this box over and proceeded to climb on and off of it most of the day.

Today, you managed to climb into your toy box!

  • You are a very strong willed girl. When you don't get what you want or when we take something away from you, you are quick to throw yourself back on the ground and scream. When we ignore you, you quickly recover and proceed with getting into something else. You do it multiple times a day.
  •  You love to play peek a boo and will hide yourself behind whatever is convenient, books, the curtains, or on this day, the box.
  •  You are still a daddy's girl. Frequently I find you sitting next to him "helping" him with his video games or his work.

  •  You are so excited to spend time outside again! We've been to the zoo and the park and we often spend time outside on the deck in the evening. You love watching everyone out walking and I find you at the front windows watching everything a lot.
  •  You communicate very well. You know the signs for all done, eat, and milk. You can say dada, mama, dog, and woof. I think there may be some others, like baby and hi, but those aren't confirmed. You wave when we say bye or hi and you know how to give high fives. You know how to go to your room, let the puppies out of their room and climb up the stairs.
  • Your hair is still growing in like crazy! I think it's going to be dark like daddy's.
  • You love to smile and get attention. We were in Walmart the other day and you were laughing and smiling at everyone who passed. They all told me how cute you were of course.
We love you baby girl. I know you're not a baby anymore, but I still reserve the right to call you that. I can't wait to see what the next month brings!

Chicken Ranch Enchiladas

I am really trying hard to cook more lately, so the other night, I turned to one of my favorite food blogs, Annie's Eats, for inspiration. I found a recipe for a Chicken Ranch Enchilada that she calls Benchiladas (in honor of her husband!) I am a horribly picky eater, so finding recipes that I like is pretty difficult. I don't like traditional enchilada red sauce, so this recipe seemed like a great alternative.

Mike and I both really enjoyed it. I halved the recipe so that it wouldn't make quite so much. We still had leftovers for the next day and it tasted just as good warmed up.

Chicken Ranch Enchiladas Source: Annie's Eats
4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
8 oz. reduced fat sour cream
8 oz. Ranch salad dressing
flour tortillas (10-15)
jar of salsa
shredded mexican cheese (I usually use close to 4 cups, I love cheese!)

1. Cook chicken breasts by preferred cooking method until cooked through. (I actually was lazy and bought Tyson's grilled and ready chicken breasts so all that I had to do was warm them up. Judge away, but cooking time is hard to find with a 1 year old so I'll do anything to make it quicker!) Set aside to cool a bit.
2. While chicken is cooling, mix up the sauce. In a large mixing bowl, combine half of the sour cream and half of the Ranch dressing. In a small bowl, combine the rest of the sour cream and Ranch dressing. Stir both until well combined. Shred or chop the cooked chicken and add to the large mixing bowl. Mix well with sauce.
3. Preheat the oven to 375°. Grease a 9 x 13″ pan (and possibly another, smaller pan if needed). Take one tortilla and top with a little less than 1 tbsp. of the sauce from the small bowl. Spread over the tortilla in an even layer. Add some of the chicken mixture to the center of the tortilla. Top with salsa to taste. Sprinkle with shredded cheese, to taste. Roll up tortilla and place, seam side down, in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with remaining ingredients (usually makes 10-15 enchiladas).
4. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes (30 for a crispier tortilla). Allow to cool a few minutes before serving.

This will definitely be one of our go-to recipes now!
