Children's Music

Several months ago, the moment came that I had been dreading. I turned kid's music on in the car and Grace liked it. It immediately calmed her down and the moment I would try to turn on anything else, she would start to scream. Her favorite so far? A weird assortment of songs sang by a bunch of kids that my parents gave her. During the first several plays of this CD, I didn't really notice anything off. But as I started to listen to the words, some of the words started to surprise me. Here are the two weirdest that I've heard so far:

"Smile, a stranger's just a friend you don't know!"

Some might debate that this just encourages kids to smile. I however envision a creepy man trying to give my child a piece of candy. Not really the message we're going for.

"And these three piggies they up and they died,
A very sad sight to see,
So don't ever try to go "oink, oink, oink,"
When you ought to go "whee, whee, whee."

This is how the song ends. Seriously. I don't get it. What is the point of this song? I know it's a folk song and I'm sure at some point it was a morality tale, but I just don't think I'm going to feel like explaining to Grace why the pigs die. Because I don't know.

I don't think this CD will last much longer in our house. Sorry Grandma and Papa.

I need some good kids music recommendations? Anyone? I've heard good things about Rockabye Baby.

  1. Not sure if you can get it in the car, but we love the Toddler Tango channel on Pandora! We have dance parties in the kitchen when it is on =)

  2. Ones that I remember from my childhood (and still enjoy) are sometimes harder to find.
    Things like:
    "The Music Machine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSSgydbEGPI&feature=related
    "Bullfrogs and Butterflies" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiea45AgKbw&feature=related

I also remember liking the Wee Sing tapes and they have just about all kinds of music.

    1. I remember those ones too! I like using the Wee Sing tapes for young music classes - lots of good ideas for games and keeping the beat.

  3. I think I know exactly which CD you have! I'm not really sure but you might like our band! hee hee =) Anyway, there are some good kids radio stations online and maybe try iTunes radio stations! We have a lot of fun listening in on there - lots of different genres! Not necessarily branded kids music at every turn but we listen to all kinds - especially Broadway Musicals, French Culture music, Classical - the kids learn to recognise all kinds of instruments, fiddle music is the best! since we love dancing around... there's so much =) I'm sure you'll find something! Have fun with it!
