Umbilical Hernia

Looking at my stats, I have been surprised to see that I have been getting a ton of hits about umbilical hernias! I couldn't even remember when I had posted about them, so I did some searching and discovered that I had posted a picture of Grace when she was 3 months old showing off her cloth diapering self where I referenced her hernia. Check out the post here if you are interested. I didn't think much of it at the time when I was posting it, because the hernia had been gone for quite a while. But now as I'm thinking about it, I did a ton of reading about them when she was a newborn because I was so concerned about it.

So here's our experience. When Grace's cord stump fell off, her belly button was very swelled up. It poked out and when she cried, it got huge! Here's what it looked like:

This is what it looked like for several months after she was born. I spoke with her pediatrician about it and he explained that it was an umbilical hernia and they occur "when the muscle through which blood vessels pass to feed the developing fetus doesn't close completely (Medline Plus.)" It's fairly common and not dangerous. Since it is a cosmetic issue, we could decide if we wanted to get it fixed when she was older, but generally they close by themselves within the first year. Sure enough, by the time she was 5 months old, it closed up and she was left with an adorable outtie.

I think daddy hopes that the outtie will keep her from wearing bikinis some day!
