Swagbucks!

As a stay at home mom, I am trying to find new ways to save money. I've been learning couponing, doing online surveys, and finding other great ways to get free money. That may sound like a gimmick : ) but Swagbucks is pretty much the easiest way to earn free money that I have found so far. When you join, you receive 30 free Swagbucks and you can earn more by doing things like taking polls, completing surveys, and referring friends. The easiest way to get Swagbucks is by searching through their search feature. I simply search for websites I would normally visit through their toolbar and I win anywhere from 3-50 Swagbucks randomly.

You can use your Swagbucks for different prizes, I always use mine for $5 Amazon.com giftcards. It doesn't take long to get the 450 swagbucks needed for the giftcard!

Teething.

I know I've complained about this before but it's getting worse. Grace is having such a hard time with teething and I'm at a loss for what to do. Tylenol is the only thing that seems to help at all but I hate to give it to her for too long. I'm very careful with the dosage, but we are now on day 4 of extreme teething pain and I don't want to keep giving her Tylenol every day. She has two teeth already in and one that is taking forever to break through. She grunts and screeches in pain, but when I give her Tylenol she suddenly relaxes and is able to rest. Last night was one of the worst we've ever had, she was up at 12, 1 and then from 2 to 6....I'm exhausted and I feel so bad for her. It seems to hurt her to lay down. If I hold her, she'll sleep. If she's in the swing, she'll sleep; but the moment I try to lay her down in her crib she wakes up in pain again. I've been letting her nap in the swing for the past week or so but I think that's actually hurting because now she wants to the motion to help her sleep.

I've tried teething gel, frozen/cold washclothes and toys, nursing, teething toys....nothing seems to help with the pain. I know it's just a stage, but I'm very ready for this stage to be over!

Favorite Books Monday

I've gotten behind on blogging due to family being in town! I have lots of great pictures and stories to share from these visits, but as Grace just went to sleep, I'm tired and will only be doing a short post!

I've been wanting to start a weekly post about our favorite books, and I finally decided to start it today.

Today's book is called "I Love You as Big as the World" by David Van Buren and Tim Warnes.

We got this book as a prize for reading to Grace through our local library's Summer Reading Program and I fell in love with it as soon as we started reading. It's a mother bear telling her baby how much she loves him and of course, as a new mom, I started to cry as I was reading it to Grace. "I love you as big as the world. I love you as deep as the sea." It sums up my feelings for Grace pretty well and I highly recommend it!

5 Months Old

Baby Girl,

You are 5 months old today. I can't believe how fast you've grown!

You have learned so much in just a short month. You don't like your bouncer anymore because you don't want to lay down and you've officially outgrown your bumbo. You want mommy to play with you all the time! We dealt with our first bout of sickness this month with pink eye and a cold, but you took it like a champ! I don't know what your stats are for this month, but I'm guessing you weigh close to 17-18 lbs.

Here's what we've noticed this month:
  • You don't want to lay down. You want to be standing the majority of the time and everyone is amazed by how strong you are!
  • You are officially sleeping in your crib now and doing ok but you are not sleeping through the night. You have been getting mommy up at 1 and 4 AM every morning for the past month wanting to eat.
  • You have two teeth! Your bottom two front teeth came in this month and they made you quite grumpy. They are very sharp and you like to bite mommy's finger to make them feel better
  • You still love to be outside and you and mommy spend a lot of time out on the deck. We sit out there most days waiting for daddy to get home.
  • You've started really noticing the dogs this month. You think they're very funny and you talk to them. You also reach out to touch them when they pass by. Buddy tried to lay down next to you one day and you grabbed a bunch of his hair and pulled it out. He still loves you though! You will watch them play for long periods of time.
  • You can now roll over from your back to your belly. This is a new trick you learned this week and you are doing it constantly! It's making changing your diaper quite challenging!
  • You started playing in your Exercauser today and loved it.
  • You learned how to grab your feet and you always try to chew on your toes.
  • You love to sing! You "sing" along when mommy sings Old McDonald to you (but you only sing during the chorus)
  • You are very interested in our food and we will be starting you on solids very soon

You are so amazing and we love you so much! I can't wait to see how much you learn this month!

Love,
Mommy

Summer Reading Program

As a librarian (yes, I actually have my Masters in Library Science) I am obviously a huge advocate of reading to your children. I have been reading to Grace since we got home from the hospital and she has quite the large collection of books! At one of my baby showers, instead of cards, people were asked to bring their favorite children's book and write a note to Grace in the front. This was one of the coolest things I've seen at a shower. I'm not a "saver" and cards get thrown away in our house, but the books will be kept for years and Grace can read the notes that people wrote to her.

At least once a week, we make a trip to our local library. I visit old coworkers and get my holds, generally new movies and books, but this last week we got to do something very exciting...we got Grace's first Summer Reading Program prize. At our library, parents can read 24 books to their children and the child gets a free book. They can do this 3 times. Grace and I read a couple of books in the morning and one before bed and we worked our way through our first set of books very quickly! I was so excited to get her certificate and pick out her first free book. She was excited too obviously!

Most library systems around the country offer some sort of Summer Reading Program, so check yours out! I hope to start using this blog to start sharing some of our favorite books!

The joys of teething

Grace now officially has two teeth. Yesterday, there was only one! I put my finger in her mouth this morning and sure enough there was another one. She's actually handling it fairly well, but she does have her grumpy days. Yesterday she was fussy pretty much all day and nothing seemed to soothe her. I tried Tylenol, a frozen teether, and my finger. I wish there was something else I could do! The FDA now advises against the use of Baby Orajel for children under the age of 2, so we're not going to use it. I've seen the Amber teething necklaces, but I'm wary of putting anything around her neck! It would just be something for her to pull on and try to put in her mouth.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My husband accidentally took my laptop power cord with him to work so I'm typing this on the iPad which is a bit challenging!

Grace is finally getting back to a normal sleep schedule. She's not sleeping through the night but she's only been up once or twice which I can handle! She learned how to blow rasberries this week which is so funny. She does it constantly. She also "sings" with me when I sing Old McDonald to her. She has such a personality already, I can't wait to see how it develops!

More tomorrow when I actually have a real keyboard....

Sick Baby

It had to happen sometime I guess, but I was really hoping to put it off longer, my poor baby got sick. The Friday before Memorial Day weekend I noticed that her eye was very red and that she felt warm. A trip to the pediatrician confirmed that Grace had pink eye and a nasty cold. She really was amazingly happy considering she was sick, but it took both Mike and I to try to get the antibiotic ointment into her eyes. She got good at closing her eyes very tight and wiggling around to try to avoid it. I don't really blame her! So we spent our Memorial Day weekend at home.

Even though she was sick, she enjoyed spending the weekend with mommy and daddy!

Not only were we dealing with pink eye and a cold, Grace also had her first tooth pop up the same weekend. So let's just say, our sleep schedule is totally thrown off. Some nights she's been up 4-5 times, others just once. A week later, we're finally starting to get her routine back to normal. Last night she was only up once.
