A long week

Grace had a hard time with her shots last week and our schedule got totally thrown off! She had a fever for two days and barely slept for 3 nights. With Mike working full time, I have night duty every night so Grace and I were both very very tired. It was a long week with a fussy baby. I feel so helpless when she feels like that, I just want to fix it but the only thing I can do is hold her while she cries. We really didn't do much at all but by Friday we were exhausted!

Friday night my parents came in to town for my cousin's med school graduation and we went to her party on Saturday. We got to meet Grace's new second cousin, Caleb. He's 11 weeks old and Grace was fascinated with him!

So adorable!
She kept trying to grab at his shoulder. Of course she's huge compared to him! I held him and couldn't believe how much heavier she is. I certainly get my work out carrying her around all day. Grace got passed around by all of the family and she did great for about an hour. Then she broke down and wouldn't stop crying. She was still exhausted and just wanted to go home. After we got home she napped for a long time. She's definitely a homebody who loves her routine. When it gets messed up she gets mad. I don't blame her : )

Overall it was a good weekend but it's nice to be home today getting our schedule back to normal. Grace is sleeping peacefully in her swing. Hopefully this week will be better!

Dogs and Baby

There's a ton of information out there on getting your dogs ready for your baby. I read conflicting opinions....some stated not to let your dogs in the nursery, to keep them away from the baby items to teach them respect. Others advocate full access so that they are prepared. Most recommend bringing something home early with the baby's smell on it. We chose to give our dogs, Buddy and Doc, full access to the nursery. We let them smell all of the new baby items coming into the house, and when Grace was born, Mike brought home a blanket that smelled like her to get them used to her smell.

We knew that we've trained our dogs well. I know this is the not the end all be all of their activity around the baby and I would never leave them totally alone with her, but I trust them around her.

This is the first day that we came home from the hospital! We literally walked in the door, sat down and then took this picture. We kept them at a careful distance, but let them sniff her and check her out.

Within several minutes, we wanted to take some pictures in front of window (it snowed about a foot that day!) and this is one of the pics we ended up getting. While Mike and I did pose, the dogs did this totally on their own!

Since that day, they have gotten used to her being around. They notice her, but the crying doesn't bother them and their barking doesn't bother her. She's just now getting to the point of noticing them playing and she likes to watch them. Buddy likes to snuggle up next to her when I put her on the floor for tummy time and Doc has always come to check on her when we're in another room. He'll put his nose right up to hers and then just walk away. This is amazing considering he licks everyone, but he doesn't lick her face like I expected him to!

They also like to sit next to me when I nurse. I call them my little lions because they sit on either side of my glider every time. I think they're protecting me and Grace : )

Here's a picture we took this past weekend of Grace and the dogs

I have a feeling that they're going to best friends growing up. Buddy and Doc don't get nearly as much attention as they used to and I feel bad for ignoring them, but they love it when people come to visit and I think they understand that Grace is important : ) They've been such good dogs through all of this and I can't imagine life without them!

4 Months

My baby girl is now 4 months old!

She had to go get her 4 month shots today and she cried so hard....I hate having to see her like that but she fell asleep in the car and has been asleep for a while now. I hope she feels better when she wakes up!

Her 4 month stats:
Height: 25 1/4 inches- 85th percentile
Weight: 16 lbs 5.2 oz- 94th percentile
Head Size: 16 3/4 inches- 89th percentile

She is a big girl! I've noticed when we're around other babies that she's on the larger side but her pediatrician says that all of her ratios look great and that she's perfect for her age. He says it is possible to overfeed breastfed babies, but that there's not much to be done about it. He was impressed with her muscle control, she can pretty much stand on her own with me holding her for balance and her head control has always been amazing. She "talked" to him and laughed! He said it was fine to wait to start solids until she's closer to 6 months but that we can really start any time we want to. I don't think we'll consistently start until at least 5 months but we'll probably start letting her taste things soon. I actually let her taste just a tiny bit of banana the other day and she loved it!

It amazes me how fast she is growing up.

4 Days

4 Months

She is so much fun now. Here's her personality traits and and fun things we've noticed lately:
  • She laughs and talks...to anything, her panda on her wall, the ceiling fan, today at the doctor she was talking to her car seat.
  • She loves looking in mirrors and laughing at herself!
  • She loves to read books...it's amazing how quickly she quiets down when I start to read to her. We read "Goodnight Moon" every night before bed.
  • She has started "giving kisses." When you give her a kiss on the cheek, she opens her mouth and puts it on your cheek. Basically you get a ton of slobber on your cheek but it's the most adorable thing ever and I love that she does it to me every time.
  • She still loves being outside, so we spend a lot of time on the deck.
  • She loves her bath time. She spends the entire time kicking her legs so that she can splash. She'll splash water in her face, but she doesn't care. She'll just laugh and do it again : ) I can't wait to get her into the pool this summer! We ordered her a float so that she can sit in it and kick.
  • She's just now started noticing the dogs, she'll give them a big smile every once and a while and she always watches them when they play.
  • She doesn't hate the carseat quite as much now and enjoys watching everything.
  • Everything goes into her mouth. Hands, toys, books, whatever she can find....and she drools everywhere : )
  • She's daddy obsessed. When he gets home from work she watches him for a long time. She'll watch him walk from one side of the room to the other and gets grumpy if she can't see him.
I can't wait to see what new things she does this month!

Trip to the zoo!

Last week my parents came up to stay with us for 4 days. They live 3 hours away but try to spend as much time with Grace as possible! We wanted to take Grace to the zoo for the first time and on Thursday it was perfect weather for her first zoo trip! Grace enjoyed sitting in her big girl stroller.

We saw the polar bear! He's huge and was playing around the glass so we got a great view!

Grace loved looking at the birds that were on the ground. She was fascinated!

After about half an hour she was done in the stroller and wanted to be carried everywhere....

I was shocked to see that I have a waist again! I love breastfeeding, it's the best diet ever!

During a water break, we had a mini photoshoot! These are some of my favorite pictures of her so far.

And later at home we sat out on the deck and Grace decided to model for us! She's so photogenic and she thinks getting her picture taken is funny.

We had a great time with my parents and Grace misses them already!

New stroller!

We got a new stroller today! When I registered for baby stuff, I realized that I had no clue what kind of stroller to get and after much research, decided to get a simple stroller frame for our Graco carseat. It was lightweight and easy to fold, which was a necessity as I'm only 5'2. I liked it and it worked pretty well. However, Grace is liking her carseat less and less and always wants to sit up. She strains in her carseat to sit up and so I decided it was time for a "big girl" stroller.

I looked at a lot of strollers and finally decided on the Fuego Chicco Liteway Stroller. It has many of the things I was looking for including a reclining backrest, an adjustable footrest, and a large basket. It folds up easily and has a 5 point harness. I wanted a gender neutral color and I love the red and gray color scheme!

Tonight was our first test run with the new stroller and it was a huge success! Grace was really mad when we put her in the stroller but as soon as we started our walk outside she was in a great mood! She loved looking around and did not want to go back inside. In fact, she started screaming again the moment we took her out of the stroller. I'm mad that I didn't get any pictures, but I'll take some soon. I need to read the instructions on the stroller to see how to loosen the straps a bit, it's a bit more complicated then the stroller frame : ) But I love it! I can't believe how big my little girl is getting.....

Fitmom class

Yesterday, Grace and I went to our first FitMom class. It's a fitness class for moms and babies that revolves around using the stroller. We were one of  about 10 mom and baby pairs and we had a great time. It was offered free at a local shopping center and normally it will be outside. But it was really rainy yesterday so we had class in an empty shop. We did laps, squats, lunges, stretches, and songs for the babies....we had fun but boy I was tired when we were done! And today, I'm really sore. After a year of not working out, I shouldn't be surprised : )

It was nice to get out of the house and I'm really committed to making new mommy friends. I'm excited to go back next week!

Mission move Grace into the crib was successful

After 3 and a half months of sleeping next to us in the pack n play, I finally decided to transition Grace into her crib. She has been taking naps in it for the last several days and I worked up the nerve to put her in there for the night last night. I think she took it better than I did! She went to sleep about 10 and woke up once at midnight to eat. She went back down again about 1 AM and slept until 7 when I woke her up to eat. So overall I think she did great! I, however, spent half the night listening to every movement on the monitor  : ) I'll get used to it soon I'm sure.

Oh and the cloth diapering went better last night. I learned that I cannot leave her naked (besides the diaper) under the swaddle. For some reason she's able to get the diaper off if I do that. She wore pants last night and we had no problems! Live and learn I guess : )

Cloth Diaper Fail....

Well we've been using cloth diapers during the day for several weeks now and it's been going great! I had been using disposables at night that we received at a shower so I figured I would start cloth at night when those were gone. Last night was our first night to use cloth and it didn't go well. I woke up at 7 AM to find her sheet and swaddle soaked. She had somehow managed to get the diaper completely off. We'll try again tonight....

Shopping Weekend!

Grace has officially outgrown all of her 0-3 month clothes and with the cloth diapers, 3-6 month stuff is a bit tight. So I inventoried all of her clothes and decided some new stuff was in order. Lucky for me, I found a gift card to JCPenney's that I forgot I had and I won a $20 gift card to a local consignment sale. So this weekend was spent shopping!

On Friday, we went to JCPenney's where they were having a huge baby sale. I found a $10 off of $25 coupon and I had a $25 gift card from a baby shower, so we got a great deal!!

This is everything we got!

5 onsies, one romper, one sundress, one outfit set, and one pair of denim romper shorts all for $5.40 after our gift card. I think I did pretty well : )

Then on Saturday, we went to the Kids Closet Connection Consignment Sale in Blue Springs. I had entered a contest on Facebook and ended up winning $10 to the vendors and $10 to the sale. Saturday was also half price day at the sale.

Here's my loot from that sale!

Calvin Klein Jeans, Old Navy shirt, romper, sundress and two flowers for headbands all for $19.66 (so free for me!!)

We had a successful shopping weekend! Here's Grace modeling one of her new flowers:
